Morphing the SmartMesh: Proposing a Novel Control Architecture

In this paper we propose a novel control algorithm for the SmartMesh [1] based on clothes simulation modelled with masses and springs. The SmartMesh is modelled as a tissue or as a blanket, which is attracted by the object that has to be represented, enveloping it. Applying the sampled data (the lengths of the springs) to the actuators of the SmartMesh will result in a deformation of the structure. The SmartMesh is a deformable mechanical structure and has recently been proposed as a novel type of haptic display affording the output of 3D shapes with the purpose to give a wide area haptic feedback.
